Chia Fresca With Watermelon: A Healthy Drink Recipe

Whether or not you're a fan of healthy food, you've probably heard of chia seeds for their nutrient content and appetite suppressant effect. But do you know the healthy drink called 'chia fresca'? Here is a simple, thirst-quenching and satiating recipe for chia fresca with watermelon.

A super drink with chia seeds

For several years now, chia seeds have become a staple ingredient in healthy eating.

The health freaks sprinkle them on their homemade bread or turn them into a plant-based milk dessert called chia pudding ...

If you haven't been following this culinary trend, you may not know that you can also make a super drink with these little seeds with multiple nutritional benefits: chia fresca.

The principle is very simple since it is enough to swell these seeds in a liquid like water or fruit juice. The result is as amazing as it is satiating since this mixture will take on a gelatinous texture.

A cocktail of benefits

As you can see, making chia fresca is not very complicated... But if this simple recipe is so appealing, it is mainly for its many health benefits.

As a reminder, chia seeds come from Central America and were once the basis of the Aztec and Mayan diet. These ancient civilizations were already consuming them to fill up on energy if we believe the etymology of their name (the word chia means 'strength' in Mayan language).

And their intuition about this food was right since these super seeds are rich in fiber, omega 3 and minerals.

Another advantage is that they swell in contact with water or any other liquid such as almond milk or coconut milk, making for very satiating desserts and drinks.

Here are the ingredients needed to make watermelon chia fresca for 2 people:

1 small watermelon
5 cl of iced water
1 teaspoon of liquid honey
1 to 2 tablespoons of chia seeds

To note: depending on how ripe your watermelon is, you can adjust the amount of honey to your taste and add a little lemon juice. Also dose the amount of chia seeds according to the desired texture (more or less thick).

Here are the steps to the recipe in pictures:

1- Slice the watermelon, then dice the flesh, removing the seeds if you wish (not essential).

2- Pour the watermelon cubes into the bowl of your blender, then add the water and honey.

4- If the bowl of your blender has a spout, add the chia seeds directly into it and mix with a spoon.

5- Place the container in a cool place and let the seeds swell in the liquid for at least 15 minutes.

6- Stir the drink again with a spoon before dividing it into two large syrup glasses. Enjoy chilled by drinking directly from the glass or through a straw.
