Montpellier-sète: 100 Free Events To Explore "the Paths Of Living"
From September 26 to October 5, 2025, the Montpellier-Sète area transforms into a true cultural playground: over 100 events, all free of charge, invite people of all ages to rediscover the region in a new way.
An application that became a movement
Remember: in 2023-2024, the M28 association was advocating for the Montpellier-Sète bid to become the European Capital of Culture 2028. Although the official verdict has not yet been announced, the momentum is certainly there. The Event 25 – The Paths of the Living is the first full-scale demonstration of this: a participatory, inclusive, and frankly ambitious program that embraces the diversity of the living basin.
Figures that make your head spin
- 100 interdisciplinary appointments (exhibitions, walks, performances, symposiums, banquets, etc.)
- 80 venues engaged, from the Cévennes karsts to the shores of Grau-du-Roi
- 150 artists, researchers, and scientists mobilized
- Free of charge for the public: all offerings are accessible at no cost
At a time when 77% of French people declare they want "more culture in everyday life" (CSA barometer 2024), the promise sounds like a breath of fresh air.
An opening under the sign of water
Friday, September 26th, head to the Jean-Claude Carrière Theatre – Domaine d'O. Cameroonian singer Blick Bassy will present Madiba, an album infused with Afro-soul sounds and committed lyrics about the preservation of "blue gold." A logical nod to a region dotted with ponds, canals, and the mythical Lez.
FLOW: When Art Questions Fragility
From September 20 to October 30, the FLOW exhibition weaves the central theme "What is fragile is precious" through four heritage jewels: Château Laurens (Agde), Étang de Thau Museum (Bouzigues), Maguelone Cathedral, and Nazareth Chapel (Montpellier). Nine visual artists explore the vulnerability of marine ecosystems, the uncertainty of migrations, and the delicateness of coral. Spoiler: one often leaves with a slight pang in the heart... and the desire to act.
Exploring the Mosson with measured steps
On September 27, wake up early! At 8:30 am, artist Julien Rodriguez and the Bipolar association launch The Cultural and Relational Atlas of the Mosson River. On the agenda: sensory walks, participatory mapping, impromptu conversations, and then a grand artistic celebration in Grabels. It's an opportunity to see this sometimes overlooked watercourse in a new light, yet it is essential for local biodiversity.
Dancing, eating, thinking: a delightful triptych
October 4th, 10am-16pm: Yann Lheureux Company presents "Les surgissements," an immersive choreographic performance at the Sources du Lez.
Same day, 8pm: head to Sète and the Chai des Moulins for a "Banquet des imaginaires" that combines Julie Graf's cinema and Charles Lebrun's creative cuisine. Food transition, inclusion, culinary art: everything is savored, even ideas!
Culture makes its way into the station.
Thanks to the partnership M28 × SNCF Gares & Connexions, six stations offer as many reasons to stop. Photographs of the Lez by Cyrus Cornut at Montpellier Saint-Roch, pop archives from the MIAM in Sète, works in progress at Vic-Mireval... Not to mention the Dictation in the station (October 1st?) which turns the hall into a giant classroom. In 2024, the previous edition had gathered more than 2,500 participants; is this a record to beat?
A welcome boost to tourism
According to Atout France, cultural tourism accounts for 8 billion euros per year in the country and motivates 30% of stays. By offering 10 days of free events, Montpellier-Sète hopes to capture a growing share of these visitors eager for discoveries. Local accommodation should benefit from this: according to the CCI Hérault, one additional point in hotel occupancy generates approximately 1.2 million euros in direct revenue for the metropolitan area.
