The Pennacs: Why Watch The France 3 Series

Following the success of the pilot episode aired in January 2022, France Télévisions has decided to turn the Pennacs into a TV series. If you haven't discovered this detective duo yet, here are 5 good reasons to watch this crime and family series on France 3.

For the father-daughter duo.

Following the success of the pilot TV movie titled "Un air de famille," which gathered some 4.6 million viewers on France 3 in January 2022, the channel has decided to green-light six new episodes of the series Les Pennacs.

The father-daughter duo formed by Christian Roth and Julie-Anne Roth is back for a series of amusing and well-crafted detective investigations. Actresses Isabel Otero and Carole Bianic round out the cast.

Even though their last name is not spelled the same way, Julie-Anne Roth is the daughter of Christian Rauth in real life and their natural chemistry works wonders in this TV series.

Regarding their family connection, Christian Rauth said in an interview: "We have great complicity in life, but once the camera is rolling, I didn't see my daughter Julie-Anne, just Annabelle. It's the miracle of this profession: being able to split oneself."

For the sunny setting.

The series "Les Pennacs" is filmed in the Occitanie region, mainly in Montpellier and the Sète area.

Season 1 was filmed from November 2022 to February 2023 in the Hérault and Gard departments, primarily in Montpellier but also in Bouzigues, Palavas-les-Flots, Fabrègues, Sète, and Florac.

3- For the blending of genres.

The series "Les Pennacs" is characterized by a explosive mix of family stories, absurd humor, and criminal plots. This blend of genres is very funny and enjoyable to follow, even if the investigations seem secondary to the tribulations of the two protagonists.

In this crime comedy, Christian Roth and Julie-Anne Roth play a father and daughter who get along like cats and dogs.

In the first episode, Annabelle Pennac thought she was done with her father Hannibal, a former cop with often questionable methods. But he is brought back as a reservist and tasked with assisting his daughter on her investigations. A collaboration that promises to be fiery!

For the family comedy.

In the Pennac series, criminal cases take a bit of a backseat. The real charm of this detective series lies in the family ties between the main characters.

Hannibal Pennac is an old curmudgeon who has been away for too long. He tries to reconnect with his daughter while fulfilling his role as a grandfather to his grandchildren… But his daughter Annabelle is not yet ready to forgive him for years of absence and has started suffering from dyslexia again since her father reappeared in her life.

Thanks to the two main actors, who are father and daughter on screen as well as in real life, these episodes transcend the detective genre and reveal themselves to be both playful and full of humanity.

For the quality of the dialogues.

The quality of the writing and the acting make this first season a real success.

The season features 6 episodes of 52 minutes each, available to watch from Tuesday, February 13 at 9:10 PM on France 3.

For the most eager viewers, this crime series is also available in full on france.tv.
