Jacques Renoir, Landscapes : A Photo Exhibition In Nice

Until February 20, 2022, the gallery of the Charles Nègre Museum of Photography in Nice hosts the exhibition Landscape Matter by Jacques Renoir. The great-grandson of the painter Auguste Renoir presents about forty unexpected and enchanting landscape photographs.

An artist to discover

Photographer, director and cameraman, Jacques Renoir loves landscapes. He has a lot to live up to since he is the great-grandson of painter Auguste Renoir, the grandson of actor Pierre Renoir, the son of director of photography Claude Renoir and the nephew of director Jean Renoir.

Faithful to this heritage, Jacques Renoir, born in 1942, was very early passionate about photography and image.

He graduated from the Louis Lumière Technical School of Photography and Cinematography and became a cameraman for the most famous directors, including Roger Vadim and Claude Sautet.

His desire to discover the world led him to follow in the wake of Captain Cousteau and the Calypso. He spent 7 years filming and directing episodes of the famous television epic.

He then directed major television reports and worked as a cinematographer for films and fiction such as the series Navarro.

But, all the time, his first passion has remained photography. Even though he uses digital photography, he experiments and proposes images close to painting.

With the exhibition Matières à paysages at the Museum of Photography in Nice, the great-grandson of the painter Auguste Renoir presents a series of shots on the theme of landscape.

A variety of themes

As a photographer, Jacques Renoir works on various themes: artists' studios, Renoir's olive trees, the nude, light and shadow, travel sketches, relief, and dance and movement.

The exhibition presented in Nice was inspired to him by his numerous hikes in the Mercantour National Park.

It was while walking in this mountain range that Jacques Renoir took a fresh and curious look at the landscapes that were offered to him.

The exhibition Landscape Matter brings together 40 shots as amazing as they are fascinating. These images play with contrasts, blur the lines and invite reverie.

As eclectic as it is, his photographic work indeed testifies to the artist's desire to 'take the gaze beyond the gaze', to go beyond appearances and to try to express the unspeakable.

If you want to discover more, note that Jacques Renoir exhibits his works permanently in his studio located in Nice near the port.
