Bts In Commerce: Overview Of Training Programs Leading To Promising Careers

With over 500,000 wishes expressed on Parcoursup each year, BTS in commerce ranks among the most sought-after post-baccalaureate programs in France. Quick professional integration, the possibility of learning through work-study, and pathways to higher education institutions explain this enduring success. Here is an overview of the main fields of the Higher Technician Certificate in the commercial sector, as well as the opportunities they offer to students.

Why BTS in business are so appealing

The Higher Technician Certificate (BTS), created in 1959, is a state diploma at the bac +2 level that is prepared in 2 years after the baccalaureate. The BTS programs in the commercial sector are among the most sought after on the Parcoursup platform.

In 2025, the BTS MCO (Operational Commercial Management) received more than 205,000 applications, the BTS NDRC (Negotiation and Digitalization of Customer Relations) nearly 154,000 applications, and the BTS International Trade about 148,000 applications. Together, they represent more than a third of the BTS applications on the platform.

Several reasons explain this enthusiasm:

  • a short training period (2 years) that allows for quick entry into the workforce,
  • high employment rates, especially for graduates in work-study programs,
  • pathways to bachelor's degrees, professional licenses, and business schools,
  • a widely accessible offer throughout the territory, in both high schools and private schools.

Note: approximately 87% of BTS graduates, across all fields, find employment within six months of obtaining their diploma, according to the Ministry of Higher Education. The figures vary by specialty, but commercial BTS programs generally show good results.

The BTS MCO: managing a business unit

The BTS Operational Commercial Management replaced the former BTS MUC in 2019. It trains professionals capable of managing a commercial unit, whether it is a store, a department, an agency, or even an e-commerce site.

The curriculum includes: point of sale management, commercial animation, team management, stock monitoring, customer loyalty, and in-store communication strategy. The BTS MCO is generalist, making it a good choice for students who are still unsure about their exact career project.

It is particularly aimed at profiles attracted to proximity management, team management, and the performance of a point of sale, whether physical or virtual.

The BTS NDRC: Sales and Customer Relationship in the Digital Age

The BTS Negotiation and Digitalization of Customer Relations (formerly BTS NRC, revamped in 2018) aims to train in customer relationship management in all its forms: in-person, remotely, and online. The digital dimension has been strengthened to incorporate new practices (CRM, social networks, e-commerce, digital prospecting).

Three main skill blocks structure the training:

  • customer relations and negotiation-sales,
  • remote customer relations and digitalization,
  • customer relations and network management.

Unlike the BTS MCO, which is more focused on managing a point of sale, the BTS NDRC primarily trains "field" and "digital" salespeople who engage directly with customers. It is the ideal training for dynamic profiles, comfortable with public speaking, who enjoy prospecting and negotiation.

The International Business BTS: a program focused on export.

For students attracted to foreign languages and international affairs, the BTS International Trade is a specialized pathway. The training emphasizes foreign market prospecting, import-export operations management, international marketing, and international trade law.

Two foreign languages are mandatory (English and a second language of choice), and an internship abroad is integrated into the program. Career opportunities include exporting companies, transport firms, freight forwarders, and purchasing departments of international groups.

It is a BTS that is more linguistically demanding than other BTS in the sector, but it leads to often more lucrative careers, particularly in BtoB and industry.

The BTS Communication: between marketing and brand strategy

The BTS Communication, halfway between business and marketing, prepares students for careers in corporate communication. The curriculum includes designing communication strategies, managing event projects, purchasing advertising space, public relations, digital communication, and community management.

Career opportunities include communication agencies, corporate communication departments, advertisers, or media outlets. It is a program favored by creative profiles who want to combine commercial aspects with creative expression.

Initial or alternating: two rhythms for the same diploma

All these BTS programs are accessible either through initial training (with internships in companies) or through work-study programs. The choice of pace has a real impact on the daily life of the student and on their professional integration.

In 2025, approximately 68% of apprenticeship contracts signed in France relate to BTS training, representing a 12-point increase compared to 2020. Companies now see work-study as a genuine pre-recruitment tool.

  • in initial training: 25 weeks of classes, internship periods, and more time dedicated to personal studies,
  • in work-study: a classic rhythm of 2 days in school / 3 days in the company, with a monthly salary paid by the employer and coverage of tuition fees.

What are the concrete opportunities after a BTS in business?

Upon obtaining a BTS in commerce, several positions are accessible immediately after graduation:

  • sales advisor, sales representative, customer service agent,
  • salesperson, sales promoter, telemarketer,

  • department manager, assistant manager, area manager (with some experience),
  • communication officer, marketing assistant, community manager,
  • import-export assistant, freight forwarder (for the BTS CI).

In terms of salary, entry-level wages vary depending on the specialty and sector. A starting sales representative earns an average of between 1,800 and 2,100 euros gross per month, excluding bonuses and commissions. The variable component can represent 15 to 30% of the fixed salary in the tertiary sector, and even more in certain sectors (BtoB, IT, industry).

Continuing studies: a springboard to a bachelor's degree and beyond.

While the BTS remains a diploma designed for direct professional integration, it also serves very well as a springboard for further studies. Many graduates indeed choose to continue their education.

Several paths are possible:

  • a professional bachelor's degree (business, marketing, e-commerce, distribution),
  • a bachelor's degree at a business school or specialized school (digital marketing, commercial management),
  • a general bachelor's degree at university (economics-management, management sciences),
  • joining a business school through parallel admission exams (Tremplin, Passerelle).

This flexibility has become a major selling point of the BTS, which no longer confines students to a "final diploma" mindset as was often the case in the past.

Note Well

The alternation includes two types of contracts: the apprenticeship contract (up to 30 years old in most cases) and the professionalization contract (open to adults in retraining with no age limit). In both cases, the student is an employee of the company and receives a salary calculated as a percentage of the minimum wage, depending on their age and year of training. Tuition fees are covered by the company through OPCOs (skills operators).

In conclusion

The BTS in commerce remains a very comprehensive training option for those who wish to quickly enter the job market while keeping the possibility of continuing their studies. Whether one is attracted to managing a retail outlet, negotiation, international business, or communication, there is certainly a program suited to their profile and project.
