Windsor: 5 Must-visit Places In This English City.

For all the fans of the British monarchy, the town of Windsor in England is a must-visit. Known for housing a royal residence, the famous Windsor Castle, this destination offers many other places to discover! We have listed for you 5 places to absolutely visit during your stay there.

1- Windsor Castle

It is impossible to compile a list of must-see attractions in Windsor, England without starting with the famous Windsor Castle! Although the official residence of the British monarchs has been Buckingham Palace since 1837, this medieval fortress is equally renowned.

It is the jewel of this city located an hour away from London by train in the county of Berkshire and is the oldest and largest occupied castle in the world. It has been inhabited by the royal family for nearly a thousand years!

This monument, which was Queen Elizabeth II's favorite residence, is a must-visit for all fans of The Crown series and other enthusiasts of the British monarchy. It is also the largest castle in the world, with an area of 52,000 square meters and no less than 1,000 rooms!

Inside this impressive fortress, you can discover luxurious State Apartments and magnificent collections of royal objects, not to mention St George's Chapel, a beautiful gothic chapel dedicated to the patron saint of England. Visitors can sometimes hear the choir performing during religious services.

2- Windsor Great Park

Another must-visit is the Windsor Great Park, an immense park and royal estate. This park, which was for centuries the private hunting ground of Windsor Castle, is now open to the public for free, to stroll or even have a picnic.

Not only does this park of over 2000 hectares offer breathtaking views of the castle of the same name, but it also houses exceptional nature and wildlife. Just take the Long Walk, a long tree-lined path, to admire the deer that live freely in the meadows and surrounding woods.

This park is home to magnificent gardens called The Savill Garden, which has an entrance fee but is worth a visit for its extraordinary collection of flowers and trees from around the world.

If you enjoy unique experiences, note that you can also take a carriage ride in the park or explore it on horseback following in the footsteps of the royal family, who are avid horse enthusiasts!

3- The picturesque downtown

Another of the 5 must-visit places in Windsor is the downtown area crossed by the Thames. Did you know that you can find the smallest street in England there, measuring only 15 meters long?

Take the time to stroll through the streets of the center to soak up its picturesque atmosphere. If you get hungry during your walk, you'll have plenty of choices between a multitude of authentic restaurants and pubs.

You can also visit a brewery there, whose beers pay tribute... to the royal family, of course!

4- The Legoland theme park.

If you visit the place with children, another must-see attraction is Legoland theme park.

With its roller coasters, thrill rides, and replicas of world-famous landmarks, this amusement park is a great idea for a family outing.

As you can imagine, this royal destination has many surprises in store for you. Here's a little detail that will surprise you: Windsor is also a destination for thrill-seekers because you can go... bungee jumping!

5- Ascot Racecourse and Eton College

To conclude this selection of must-see visits, I would like to point out two places not to be missed in the surroundings of Windsor.

The first one is Eton College or Eton College in English. This school for boys aged 13 to 18 is undoubtedly the most famous public school in Great Britain because it is where the children of the royal family and the aristocracy are educated.

The second place to discover is Ascot Racecourse located just 9 km from the town of Windsor. This racecourse is the most prestigious in the United Kingdom and has close ties to the royal family. If you go there in June, during the mythical Royal Ascot meeting, don't forget to dress up!
