Moon Boots: The History Of Iconic Après Ski Boots

Emblematic shoes of ski resorts, the Moon Boots are an Italian invention. We invite you to discover the amazing story of the Moon Boot, an after ski boot inspired by the Apollo 11 mission!

The star shoe of the après ski

More than 50 years after its invention, the Moon Boot is the indisputable after-ski boot in resorts around the world.

It must be said that this boot has no equal in combining comfort and design at the foot of the slopes. At once light, warm and waterproof, it has all the qualities to walk in the snow without getting cold feet.

Even if they are now available in new shapes and colors, it is in their original version that the Moon Boots are the most appreciated by winter sports enthusiasts a bit nostalgic of the 1980s...

A design inspired by astronauts' shoes

It's no coincidence that the Moon Boot has this name and looks like a shoe to go to the moon!

Its inventor Giancarlo Zanatta is a member of the Italian family that founded the Tecnica brand. This young boot maker in Montebelluna, Italy was on a trip to New York when he witnessed live the first steps of Neil Armstrong on the moon on July 29, 1969.

This historic day, followed by millions of viewers around the world, sparked a funny idea in his head: to create a revolutionary after-ski boot with a lunar design!

Inspired by the shoes worn by the astronauts of the Apollo 11 mission to walk on the Moon, Zanatta imagines the first Moon Boots, big and comfortable boots all in roundness.

A practical shoe that became iconic

With chunky crepe soles, a padded nylon body and a long braided cord to lace up, the Moon Boot is both very light, waterproof and nice and warm.

It is primarily because of its practicality that it has won over winter sports enthusiasts, even more so than its innovative look. It must be said that this after-ski boot is very easy to put on and allows you to walk safely even when the streets of ski resorts are slippery.

Since their creation, the Moon Boots are available in a wide range of colors and offer a unique concept: a single left / right foot and a single size to cover four sizes!

These boots for the snow are moreover meeting an immediate and immense success in all the snowy regions of the world. To date, it is estimated that over 25 million pairs have been sold around the globe for their unmatched style and comfort.

This funny shoe even had the honor of being included in a selection by the Louvre Museum among the 100 iconic objects of the 20th century.

A recent return to favour

After falling out of favor in the 1990s, when it was replaced by more ergonomically shaped snow boots, the Moon Boot has made its big comeback in the early 21st century for women, men, and even babies!

It has experienced a real comeback, to the point of making a remarkable entrance on the catwalks during the fashion shows of Dolce & Gabbana, Dior or Chloé.

Carried by the vintage fashion, the flagship model of the brand Tecnica has adapted to win back the hearts of customers. The famous Moon Boots are now available in patent, leather, denim and even glitter...

We can say that this global star has made a successful comeback because it is now worn by fashionistas in the city as well as in the mountains. We could see her at the feet of many people as Paris Hilton or Kylie Jenner. A real consecration for this shoe that has been able to trace its path from the Moon to the Earth by touching the stars ...
