Christmas Diy: How To Make An Advent Wreath?

The Advent wreath is a German custom whose origin dates back to the 16th century. This wreath, which is placed on a table, is decorated with four candles that are lit successively during the four Sundays before Christmas. Here is the method to follow to make an advent wreath.

What does this crown consist of?

The Advent wreath or Adventkranz in German is a tradition to wait for Christmas.

Its circular shape is a very old symbol of eternal life, as are the fir or Pine branches that stay green all year round.

This wreath has four candles that are traditionally lit to mark the four Sundays before Christmas Eve.

The first candle is lit on the 4th Sunday before Christmas, two candles on the 3rd Sunday and so on until all are lit to celebrate the last Sunday before Christmas.

What is the necessary equipment?

Here are the materials needed to make an Advent wreath:

- a straw wreath to use as a stand (from florists)
- branches of fir, pine, cypress or yew
- wire
- four red or white candles
- four candle bases
- matching ribbon
- decorations of your choice (dried flowers, pine cones...)
- glue

What are the manufacturing steps?

1) Cut fir branches 10 to 15 cm long.

2) Attach the fir branches tightly to the wreath with the wire.

3) Attach the candle bases to the wreath with the wire.

4) Mask the wire using fir or decorations that you will attach with glue.

5) Decorate the Advent wreath to your liking with ribbon and decorations, then place the candles on top.
