Christmas Gift: The Trend Of Second-hand Toys

If, in the past, consumers were reluctant to offer second-hand Christmas gifts, this is no longer the case today. The big brands have understood this and are now investing in the second-hand toy market. Here is a deciphering of the second hand toys trend.

What are the numbers?

According to the IDM Families Institute's Family Trends barometer, 67% of parents have made a habit of reselling their toddlers' neglected comforters and games.

The offer of second-hand toys has therefore increased in recent years on flea markets and classifieds sites between individuals such as Leboncoin.

At the same time, sites specializing in second-hand games and toys have emerged such as Andy Family or Le Temps des Retrouvailles.fr

The increase in supply is of course good news for the environment and the circular economy, but also for the Christmas gift budget as second hand allows you to find all kinds of games and figurines at low prices!

Why buy used toys?

The trend of second-hand toys is due to environmental and financial reasons. More and more parents, especially in the younger generations, have become aware of the impact of the toy industry on the planet.

Furthermore, due to inflation affecting all manufactured goods, the price of Christmas toys is likely to increase by an average of 10% in 2022 compared to 2021. In this context where rising prices reduce the purchasing power of families, the second-hand toy appears more than ever as a good alternative.

On average, the price of a second-hand toy is less than half the price of new. Buying used is therefore a solution that is good for the environment and the wallet!

Where to buy used toys?

In this sector, some initiatives have existed for many years already, such as the Rejoué association which offers second-hand toys at reduced prices. This solidarity initiative helps to promote professional integration because the toys are collected, sorted, cleaned and tested in an integration workshop (see link below).

Recently, big brands are also following the trend of second-hand toys. JouéClub stores, for example, occasionally organize TrocOJoué that allow you to win vouchers in exchange for old toys that you drop off in store.

For its part, the King Jouet group has so far opened 7 King Okaz stores in France, where new products are sold alongside second-hand toys. King Jouet has thus become the first toy chain in France to sell second-hand products in its stores all year round.

In Oxybul stores, it is now possible to give a second life to toys that children no longer want thanks to IDTroc. All you have to do is drop off old toys at the store and the brand takes care of the rest. If it manages to resell them, the entire amount of the sale is paid on a gift card that you can use among the brands of the ÏdKids group (Okaïdi, Oxybul, Jacadi...).

If your old toys are unsold, you can also give your consent for them to be passed on to partner associations and organizations.
