Greasy Hair: Beware Of Build Up!

If you feel like your hair is heavy and sticky after washing, you are probably experiencing a phenomenon known as build-up. We will explain exactly what it is and how to remedy it.

What is the build-up effect?

The expression "build up" literally means "accumulation" in English.

In the field of cosmetics, particularly hair care, this expression refers to the progressive accumulation of residues and silicones on the scalp and hair strands.

How to recognize a build up?

The main sign that your hair has build up is that it looks dirty, dull, and sticky even after washing.

Specifically, your hair feels heavy and sticky at the roots, as if you have greasy hair...

On the lengths, the strands always seem poorly rinsed and remain sticky. They may even clump together.

What are the causes of build up?

The build-up effect is always related to an inappropriate hair care routine. In some cases, greasy hair can be caused by ineffective washing or, on the contrary, by excessive hair care products applied in too large quantities or not rinsed properly.

In the first case, your hair remains dirty and dull because you are using a shampoo that is too mild or because you use the no poo method (washing exclusively with conditioner).

Many women are unaware, but the no poo method is a ritual reserved for very dry and curly hair. This method does not necessarily work for other types of hair and does not clean them enough, which ultimately makes the hair dull and sticky.

In the second case, it is the nourishing masks, conditioners, and oil treatments that unnecessarily weigh down your hair. In summary, it is not always easy to find the right balance to take care of your hair, but it is important to remember that too much care kills the care!

How to remedy build up?

When your hair is suffering from build-up, you must first determine the cause of this phenomenon. Indeed, the solution to adopt will not be the same depending on whether your hair is not properly washed or if it is weighed down by an excess of hair care products.

If you are a fan of no poo or gentle, organic, or sulfate-free shampoos, it is likely that the shampoos you use are not degreasing enough and do not remove all residues from other products. Your gentle shampoo may be too gentle for you... The first thing to do is therefore to change it and look for a purifying shampoo that is not too harsh.

Finding the right product is not always easy, so I recommend asking for advice at a pharmacy or para-pharmacy or even consulting a dermatologist. In any case, opt for a silicone-free product to avoid further weighing down the hair fiber. A good cleansing product can be recognized by the fact that it lathers well during the second shampoo.

Sometimes, hair build-up appears in people who take great care of their hair. It's quite unfair, but these people weigh down and dull their hair thinking they are doing the right thing...

If you have tried oil baths and they haven't given you beautiful hair, don't look any further! Stop applying oil to your hair and go back to more traditional treatments, such as conditioner and a moisturizing mask.

Your hair can also become dull and sticky if you are heavy-handed when applying moisturizing treatments and if you rinse them poorly. In this case, the solution is to reduce the amount, rinse meticulously, and use only one type of treatment with each wash.

Even if your hair tends to tangle, during a build-up period, you will have to choose between a detangling conditioner, a moisturizing mask, or leave-in cream to prevent these different treatments from accumulating on your hair.

By lightening your hair care routine and choosing products that are more suitable for your hair type, you should regain beautiful, light, and shiny hair after each wash.
