Robert Doisneau : Portraits Of Artists And Views Of Lyon

The exhibition Robert Doisneau - Portraits of Artists and Views of Lyon is extended at the Jean Couty Museum until April 30, 2022. More than 70 photographs by Robert Doisneau are presented alongside 31 works by Jean Couty. The ensemble forms a unique dialogue between photographs and drawings or oil on canvas.

A new exhibition

The Jean Couty Museum in Lyon is hosting a groundbreaking exhibition dedicated to Robert doisneau until April 30, 2022: Robert Doisneau - Portraits of Artists and Views of Lyon.

The famous French photographer is known worldwide for his portraits and street scenes like the famous Baiser de l'Hôtel de Ville. But other images have remained unpublished.

For this exhibition, the Jean Couty Museum presents more than 70 shots of the photographer, about 20 of which have never been shown to the public.

A double theme

As its title indicates, the exhibition Robert doisneau - Artists' Portraits and Views of Lyon is structured around two themes: artists' portraits and studios on the one hand and views of Lyon on the other.

This exhibition was conceived by Clotilde Scordia, the curator of the exhibition, in collaboration with the Atelier Robert Doisneau.

In particular, it allows you to (re)discover about thirty photos of Lyon taken during the Vogue years.

Robert Doisneau worked for 3 years for Vogue magazine between 1949 and 1952. He then made several reports on post-war cities, including a series on Lyon in 1950 with Edmonde Charles-Roux.

In the exhibition, these photographs dialogue with more than 30 works, oils on canvas or drawings signed Jean Couty and representing views of Lyon.

Portraits of artists never revealed

At the same time, the Jean Couty Museum team wanted to complete this corpus with portraits of artists such as Braque, Foujita, Fernand Léger and his dog, Sempé and Wolinski.

Five color prints representing Poliakoff, Vasarely, Braque in his studio, Picasso in Mougins and Niki de Saint-Phalle are unveiled to the public for the first time in this exhibition.
