Christmas Markets: 4 European Cities Famous For Their Markets

During the Advent season, some European cities put on their best clothes to welcome visitors from all over the world. We have selected 4 European cities that are particularly famous for their Christmas markets, but also have many other treasures to discover.

1- Cologne

The Christmas market in Cologne is one of the most famous in Germany.

This city, which is the fourth largest German metropolitan area, offers a total of 7 different Christmas markets, each more enchanting than the last.

The ideal way to discover these different markets and the magnificent Christmas lights in the city is to spend at least a weekend there.

The Christmas markets are located in the city center near the most beautiful tourist sites.

The most unmissable is the one in Place du Dom, the magnificent Gothic-style cathedral. In the middle of the square stands a gigantic Christmas tree that lights up at dusk.

Other markets are held in the city's main squares: the oldest Christmas market in Cologne, for example, takes place in Neumarkt, near the main shopping streets.

Here you can taste local products and drink a nice mulled wine served in a mug with the image of Cologne. This mug is actually a souvenir to bring back from your stay, as these Christmas mugs are dated and change every year.

2- Salzburg

The Salzburg Christmas Market is one of the most beautiful and oldest in Europe. Its origins, in fact, date back to the late 15th century.

This market takes place every year near the cathedral, in the heart of the old town, which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

It traditionally begins on the Thursday before the first Sunday of Advent and ends on 1 January.

You will find about a hundred stalls offering all sorts of specialities and gift ideas, as well as a daily entertainment programme.

Come and stroll through this Christmas market with your family and enjoy Christmas tales for children, parades of Krampus (who are a kind of local bogeyman), choirs and concerts.

You can also take advantage of your stay to visit Mozart's birthplace, its old town with its picturesque streets and its fortress.

3- Budapest

During the Advent season, the Budapest Christmas Market brings together the best of Hungarian craftsmanship.

In the capital, the main Christmas markets are found around Vörösmarty Square and in front of St Stephen's Basilica.

They bring together more than a hundred exhibitors selected for their typical handicrafts. These craftsmen also sometimes demonstrate their know-how in front of the visitors.

4- Prague

A wonderful destination in any season, the city of Prague becomes especially magical as Christmas approaches.

The Christmas markets in Prague will immerse you in a fairytale atmosphere.

The biggest and most famous of them is held on the Old Town Square, around the statue of Jan Hus.

It traditionally runs from December until January 6 and even stays open on December 24, December 25 and New Year's Day!

There is a huge Christmas tree lit up with thousands of lights and a living nativity scene with farm animals.
