Cats resemble each other a lot. They form a remarkably homogeneous species: what is true for one cat is likely to be true for another, from the need to mark their territory to the way they hunt or groom themselves. Compare this to dogs, where a border collie and a bulldog seem to belong to two different worlds, and you can appreciate how closely domestic felines remain to one another.
And yet, no owner will tell you that their cat is interchangeable. Each one differs in appearance, of course, but especially in behavior: their way of welcoming a visitor, reacting to an unfamiliar noise, demanding their meal, or tolerating the neighbor's cat.
It is this individual aspect that matters most in your shared life. It doesn't come out of nowhere: it results from a very fine interaction between the animal's genetic heritage and everything it has experienced, particularly during its first twelve months. Suffice it to say that you, as an owner, have a real margin of action.
Twenty years ago, most scientists reserved the word "personality" for humans. Talking about a cat's character was considered mere anecdote. This is no longer the case: researchers now assert unequivocally that cats do have a personality, in the sense of stable and individual-specific ways of reacting.
The studies conducted so far highlight three main dimensions. First, sociability towards other cats: some readily accept their housemates, while others avoid them. Second, sociability towards the humans in the household: some love close contact, while others tolerate it from a distance. Third, and probably the most decisive, is the degree of boldness: an enterprising and active cat, or a calm and cautious one.
These three axes combine freely, resulting in eight possible profiles. A cat may be fearful of novelty while being very affectionate with you and the other cat in the house. Another may be hyperactive, cuddly with its human, but unable to share a couch with another cat.
Nota Bene: to assess all this, there are two methods. Asking the owner, which is quick but inevitably colored by affection and preconceived notions, or directly observing the cat, which is more reliable but takes much longer. The most solid descriptions come from observation, and they show that most cats fall somewhere in the middle of each axis, without pushing any trait to the extreme.
The cat is nothing of an exception. The notion of personality now applies to animals as diverse as lizards, crickets, bees, geese, or chimpanzees. In all these species, individuals are observed to react consistently and differently to the same world.
The most common pattern is that of the bold/shy pair. The bold ones are the first to exploit a new food source, while the shy ones avoid diving headfirst into a dangerous situation. Neither strategy is better: depending on the environment, sometimes the reckless thrive, and sometimes they are the first to perish. This is precisely why the genes of both temperaments persist in populations.
An experiment on sticklebacks, those small fish that swim in schools, shows how much social context matters. Place a fish in front of two schools, one composed of bold individuals and the other of shy ones: it will choose the bold school, whether it is bold itself or not. Bold schools find more food, and a shy fish finds a good hiding place there.
However, to stay with them, it must swim faster than usual. Gradually, it begins to act like a bold fish. We still know little about social effects in the case of cats, but the hypothesis is fascinating: your cat may partly adjust its character to that of the other inhabitants of the house, humans, felines, and even canines.
The boldness/shyness axis is probably the most important because it not only determines behavior in the moment but also conditions what the cat learns. A bold cat gains more insights from a new experience than a fearful cat simply because it approaches it. However, if it becomes too confident and gets hurt, for example by showing off in front of a fighting tomcat, it may end up learning less than a cautious cat that remains still to observe the scene.
A now-classic experiment has demonstrated this well. The descendants of two males were compared, one known for producing "friendly" kittens and the other for "unfriendly" ones. The litters were raised with varying degrees of handling, some kittens handled daily, others barely at all. At one year old, they were placed in a room with an unfamiliar object, a simple cardboard box.
The offspring of the "friendly" father examined the box more quickly and thoroughly, while those of the "unfriendly" father stayed back. In other words, what the father transmitted was not a gene for friendliness but a way of reacting to the unknown. Bold kittens spontaneously approached people and thus quickly learned to interact with them, while shy ones took longer to reach the same level of confidence.
The key point, and reassuring aspect: when handled sufficiently each day, shy kittens became just as friendly as the others, albeit with a slightly less demonstrative way of showing it. On the other hand, deprived of daily contact, those from the shy father still hissed and flattened themselves on the ground at one year old. Genetics provides a tendency; it does not dictate the destination.
Linking a cat's coat to its character seems to be part of human nature. In Britain, it is said that tortoiseshells are mischievous, that marbled tabbies are true homebodies, that tabbies are independent, and that white spots have a calming effect on the animal. These catalogs circulate everywhere, even when the facts say otherwise.
Some researchers have suggested that the biochemistry producing coat colors could influence brain function, a genetic phenomenon called pleiotropy. In cats, very little evidence has been found to support this idea.
There are indeed associations, but for other reasons. The dominant white coat gene is located on the same chromosome, close to a gene that produces blue eyes and deafness: white cats with blue eyes are therefore almost always deaf. Similarly, a cat with dark extremities, even without pedigree, will often be very talkative, not because of the color but because this gene is rare in cats without a Siamese in their recent ancestry.
Another telling example: about twenty years ago, Scottish British Shorthairs with red, cream, or tortoiseshell coats were reputed to be difficult to handle. Tracing the pedigrees revealed a male with a particularly complicated temperament who, being one of the few to produce these colors, had spread his character throughout that part of the breed. The color was just a marker, not a cause. In short, judging a cat by its coat is the best way to be mistaken.
The difference in nature between appearance and character is striking. The color and length of fur depend on about twenty well-identified genes that act in a very predictable way: two black parents produce a black kitten, whether it is born in a bush or in a kitchen. Personality, on the other hand, relies on hundreds of genes and a lifetime of experiences that interact.
Even appearance is not always immune to the environment. The dark extremities of the Siamese come from a temperature-sensitive mutation: at birth, against their mother's warm belly, the kittens are almost white. As their paws, ears, and muzzle cool down, the fur darkens. And as the cat ages and circulation slows in its skin, it gradually turns brown all over its body.
On the behavioral side, experience weighs heavily. Whether a cat tolerates humans depends first on a non-negotiable point: having had contact, and good contact, during its first eight weeks. Without that, it will fear all humans. Then, the way it expresses affection depends greatly on the amount of handling received during its second and third months.
Nota Bene: Researchers once thought that some cats carried "friendly" genes and others "unfriendly" genes. Upon further investigation, they discovered that these genes actually influenced the degree of boldness. A shy cat is not less affectionate than a bold cat; it simply learns to relate differently. By around one year of age, each cat has generally fixed its attitude towards humans: repeated tests at two and three years show very little change.
We often forget that cats are fundamentally territorial animals, leaving a strong imprint on their environment. A stable social environment is not enough for them; they rely on you to provide a stable physical environment as well, with their landmarks, scents, hiding spots, and high vantage points.
This is where the problem lies in our modern homes. Owners report that half of cats avoid human visitors, that almost all fight with or carefully avoid neighboring cats, and that half of those living with another cat under the same roof either avoid each other or quarrel. These conflicts are very stressful: fear during the episode, anxiety while waiting for the next one, constant vigilance to detect cues that we don't even perceive, like the scent of a rival. Over time, chronic anxiety damages health and shortens lifespan.
If you want to add a cat to your home, the method matters more than good intentions. First, settle the newcomer in a room that the resident cat rarely visits, so it can establish a small territory and get to know you before facing the other. They will be aware of each other's presence, if only by scent, but this is much less stressful than seeing each other immediately.
Next, create familiarity: regularly exchange their toys and bedding, and introduce the scent of the other cat to the newcomer along with a treat or play session, so it associates the scent with something pleasant. Only arrange the real meeting when the scent of the other no longer triggers any negative reaction, and proceed step by step, a few minutes at a time.
The way of occupying space says a lot about character. For some cats, their owner's home constitutes all the territory they need, and they rarely venture beyond a few meters. Others carve out a hunting ground in a nearby park and come and go discreetly, carefully avoiding the males in the neighborhood.
The relationship to hunting follows the same individual logic. All cats sufficiently exposed to real prey become effective predators by around six months, but the manner varies greatly: some patrol constantly, while others settle for hours in the exact spot where they know prey will appear. Some seem incapable of catching a bird, while others capture more than just rodents. There is no indication that there are innate bird hunters or mouse catchers: each primarily reproduces the tactics that have earned them a meal.
There is even a form of transmission that does not go through genes. In some regions of New Zealand, cats live around farms, fed on rodents and scraps, while others, in the neighboring thickets, survive solely on their own catches. Males circulate between the two populations, but females adopt their mother's lifestyle: born on the farm, they stay there and share its territory; born in the woods, they fend for themselves.
In other words, cats also inherit a kind of maternal culture, which may have only a distant connection to their DNA.
Nothing illustrates this diversity better than three related cats, who spent most of their lives in the same house, yet had nothing in common in terms of personality.
Filou, a fluffy black and white kitten, grew into a big, scruffy hunter with a rather unpleasant character. Unlike many cats, he had no fear of rats, even adults. He quickly realized that leaving a dead rat on the kitchen floor before breakfast was not appreciated, and kept his predatory activities to himself. Brave in front of rodents, he would nonetheless flee from his fellow felines: you could hear him rush through the cat flap, while outside the window an old male from the neighborhood would stare at the back door.
Venus, his little niece, showed no interest in hunting and rarely ventured more than ten meters from the house. The only exception was when she was in heat; she would disappear over the garden wall for hours.
Choupette, Venus's daughter born in the same house, was as brave in hunting as Filou, but she had her own method with males: instead of approaching them, she called them. Same family, same roof, three distinct personalities. The lesson is clear: no cat is truly representative of its breed or lineage.
To verify that these differences were not due to perception, it was necessary to observe the cats in an identical situation, repeated over time. The chosen moment was mealtime: just before and just after. The trick is twofold, as it ensures that the cats going out are at home, and that all start the observation on an empty stomach to finish it satisfied.
During the food preparation, the 36 observed cats did what all cats do while waiting for their bowl: pacing around the kitchen with their tails up, meowing, rubbing against legs. But in detail, the styles diverged significantly. Some systematically rubbed while purring, others never did. Some wandered much more than others. Some insisted on meowing to attract attention, which their owners clearly did not appreciate much, as they more often petted the calm cats.
After the meal, the same diversity: some went out immediately, others sat down to groom themselves, some continued to interact with their human, and others went to sniff the person they knew less well in the room, namely the observer. And those who had shown the most interest in this stranger before the meal resumed after.
The core of the study hinged on one question: does each cat behave the same way every time? The visits, once a week for eight weeks, showed real consistency. What was measured thus reflected the animal's personality, or at least its "personal style." It is worth noting, however, that only about half pushed these tendencies to the extreme, while the others divided their time between rubbing and meowing, with moderate activity.
This variety of characters is not a picturesque detail; it is an asset. Today's cats still carry a wide genetic diversity that influences temperament, learning, and behavior. It is this raw material that gives hope that the species can adjust to the demands of the 21st century, including more homebound lives, with cats better suited for indoor living.
But genes alone will do nothing, and natural evolution does not move fast enough to keep pace with our expectations. This is where you come into play. The second and third months are the critical window: this is when the kitten learns to identify its peers, how to interact with them, to meet different types of humans, and to choose its strategy in the face of the unknown, whether to be curious or to flee.
After that, not everything is decided. Training, often dismissed as reserved for "show cats," actually reduces anxiety. For example, clicker training can help a cat enter its carrier on its own instead of being pushed inside, and the same logic helps approach stressful situations calmly, such as the arrival of visitors. Teaching the cat to scratch in a specific place, rather than depriving it of the opportunity, protects your furniture without amputating its means of defense. And fifteen minutes of daily play strengthens the bond and stimulates the cat.
So observe yours for what it is, not for the color of its coat or the reputation of its breed. Notice whether it is bold or cautious, whether it tolerates its peers, and how it likes to be touched. It is by starting from this individual profile, and not from an average cat that does not exist, that you will offer it a more serene life.
