Apple Crown: A Low-sugar Cake

Apple cakes usually win unanimous approval from the whole family. If you want to delight both young and old with a cake that contains little sugar and lots of fruit, try this apple crown recipe! It is made with golden apples and maple syrup but does not contain white sugar.

Ingredients

Here are the necessary ingredients to make a low-sugar apple crown for 4 people:

3 large Golden apples.
160 g of semi-whole T110 flour.
1 packet of baking powder.
1 packet of vanilla sugar.
1 pinch of salt.
7 cl of sunflower oil.
2 tablespoons of maple syrup.
2 tablespoons of lemon juice.
1 tablespoon of amber rum.
2 eggs.
1 large knob of butter for the mold.

Apple Preparation

The secret to this lightly sweetened apple crown lies in its high fruit content. To prepare a truly delectable cake, you need 3 large Golden apples (or 4 small ones).

1- Peel the apples and cut them into quarters to remove the core.

2- Cut the quarters into small dices, as shown in the picture below.

Note: to ensure you use the right proportion of apples, you should have about 500 g of whole apples and 400 g of diced apples.

Cake Batter Preparation

The dough for this apple crown is very easy and quick to prepare.

1- In a mixing bowl, combine the semi-whole wheat flour with the yeast, vanilla sugar, and a pinch of salt.

2- Make a well and pour the liquid ingredients into the center. Add in the following order: sunflower oil, maple syrup, lemon juice, and amber rum.

3- Mix the ingredients until you get a smooth dough. At this stage of the recipe, it is normal for the dough to be thick and sticky.

4- Fold in the diced apples and mix again.

Note: even though the high proportion of apples may be surprising, do not overmix the dough, as this could result in a cake that is too dense.

Apple Crown Baking

1- Preheat your oven to 180°C (350°F).

2- Generously butter a savarin mold, which is a ring-shaped mold.

3- Pour the batter into the mold, using a spoon if necessary, as the batter is sticky and filled with chunks of apple.

4- Bake the apple crown for 35 minutes, keeping an eye on the browning.

Tasting Tips

Let the apple crown cool before turning it out onto a serving plate.

This apple cake that pleases the whole family is an ideal autumn dessert for snack time.

Because it's rich in fruit and without added white sugar, it allows for guilt-free indulgence.
