For ten years now, the mischievous creatures of THE MONSTERS have been roaming the world. For their first decade, they are treating themselves to a global tour... and have chosen the French capital as the sole stop on the Old Continent.
In the City of Light (which we also like to call the romantic city, let's admit it), the audience is invited to discover an unpublished chapter titled "MONSTERS BY MONSTERS: NOW AND THEN".
A formula that sets the scene: between memories and promises of the future, the exhibition resembles a large family album that we browse through with tenderness.
2015: Birth of THE MONSTERS. 2026: Time for reflection, laughter, and perhaps a touch of nostalgia.
The organizers have envisioned a comprehensive retrospective, rich in never-before-seen sketches, collectible figurines not found elsewhere, and small vignettes that remind us of the journey taken.
It captures the mischievous spirit of LABUBU, the star with a pout recognizable among thousands, as well as a whole procession of elves, dreamt-up creatures, and iconic objects.
The exhibition unfolds in six thematic spaces. Each area acts as a gateway to the imagination of Kasing Lung: paintings, sculptures, artist toys, preparatory drawings...
The idea is simple: to invite the visitor to wander, to change their perspective and, perhaps, to let themselves be captivated by these monsters that are, after all, very endearing.
In this first section, oil paintings are displayed alongside meticulously sculpted volumes. The colors, sometimes dark, sometimes soft, reveal the artist's reflections.
It quickly becomes evident that behind each predatory smile lies a deeper emotion. Take the time to walk around the sculptures: the details, a protruding ear, a folded paw, already tell a little story.
Atmosphere shift: here, the setting becomes cozy. LABUBU plush toys with vinyl faces create a tiny lounge, almost a burrow.
Step through the door, settle in, trigger the shutter... and leave with a keepsake photo. A playful (and slightly regressive) moment that will delight both fans and the curious.
We then enter the "Designer Toy" area, a veritable living catalog of the last decade. From the original LABUBU to the cult collaborations, the shelves line up like three-dimensional comic book panels. Each figure has its own temperament, its wink, its little story. It's impossible not to look for your favorite, or resist the urge to take a photo and share it right away.
Open notebooks, markers still in sight, scribbled pages... The sketches on display in this space reveal the spark, the initial idea scrawled in a corner.
Here we trace the evolution of THE MONSTERS step by step: a tentative line, then a more defined character design, and finally the figure that now stands proudly in display cases.
For those who love the creative process, it's a real treat.
The Monsters Trilogy occupies its own niche, with its volumes being perused as one would a spellbook.
These pages, filled with scenes that are at times humorous and at times poetic, serve as the perfect gateway to grasp the roots of this magical universe.
It also becomes clearer why these particular monsters inspire such affection.
